The lead of my quartet, New Groove, suggested that we sing “I Love to See You Smile.” Given that it was written by Randy Newman, whose harmonic sensibilities are very compatible with barbershop, I knew it would work well. I arranged this one immediately after arranging a different modern pop song that was difficult to fit into the rules and style of contestable barbershop. But when I got a hold of this one, things started flowing easily. I’m not going to stop ‘shopping more challenging songs, but give me more Randy Newman to arrange!
