The tenor in my own quartet, New Groove, is a big fan of “Coventry Carol,” and he suggested it for a recent Christmas show.  The rest of us love the melody and harmony, but the subject matter – the massacre of the innocents by Herod – is a little macabre for modern Christmas performances. So I adapted the words to talk about the Christ child, and made it a tenor feature so he wouldn’t get too mad. It turned out rather lovely, I think, and not very hard to learn.
