I saw the movie “La La Land” toward the end of its theatrical run because my friends in the quartet Momma’s Boys (now The Kelly Brothers) were interested in singing a song or two from it. I remember walking out of the theater in a bit of a daze, remarking that I was having a hard time thinking of a movie I had enjoyed more in many years, if ever. A few years later, my love for the movie has only strengthened. And the climactic song “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” sums up the themes and the spirit of the movie perfectly (including the reason why the ending is joyously happy). Momma’s Boys performed it at BHS International in Salt Lake City in 2019 with modified lyrics to pay tribute to their barbershop mentors and idols. But the original lyrics are just as touching. Here’s to the fools who dream!
